AZ  v Philly: How it will go:

The Rattlers are National Conf/ West Div leaders at 12-2 and are 7-1 Home, 5-1 Away. They have scored 868 points and given up 653. The team also won the Division and will play a first round home playoff game.

Soul, of the American Conf/East Division are 5-9 at home 3-3, away 2-6. Scored 772 points surrendered 774. They are third in a division that may not send a team to the playoffs. That makes them dangerous plus their Coach Mike Hohensee is one of the AFL’s best ever. Beating AZ at home would be of great use to him for building next year’s squad.

Team Sacks: AZ - 23  Philly 20

For AZ it is Pittman 7, Hawthorne 6. Glasper 5.5, Harrington 3.5.

For Philly: Campbell 7.5, Barno 4, Perkins 1 and a bunch with 1 each.

Team INT:    AZ 29  Philly 17

For AZ Gray 8, Floyd 7, Hill 6, McCullough 5, Swanson 2, Pittman 1.

For Philly:  Varner 5, Brown 4, Sadler 2 and six with 1 each.

Injuries: AZ now has LB McCullough and WR Harvey on the sidelines and is for the first time facing the injury bug to several key performers at a critical point.

Around the League

Blaze over Powers Pittsburgh 81-41…

At Home in Salt Lake, the Utah Blaze (6-7) defeated the Pittsburgh Power (7-6), 81-40, in front of 9,096 The 41-point victory ties the largest margin of victory in Blaze history.  Utah remains tied for fourth place in the National Conference. The Blaze D stepped up forcing 2 fumbles early as Khreem Smith and  Caesar Rayford and their sack led to the first  TD pass from Grady to Alvance Robinson then a sack by Micahael Lewis led to  a recovery and score by Brandon Talyor. The quarter ended with the Blaze leading, 21-13. The second quarter both teams played even, trading scores.

In the third however, the Blaze D turned off the Power on Pitt and allowed no scoring.  Utah’s offense did add to it and the fourth started at 60-27 Blaze ahead. Grady and his beasts added three more and Pitt managed two scores to get to the final, dismal, lowly, disastrous, final score 81-40. Grady, he finished with 10 TD’s to bring his total to 95 TD’s. Not a misprint 95 TD’s.  Blaze WR Lesue pulled in five TD’s.  This game casts a pall on the Power’s Playoff Push. They can pretty much join Cleveland as post season fans.

KC Uses New Kid to Slap Down Gladiators 50-41

For three quarters the team with a QB taking his first snaps ruled the nets as the visiting Cleveland were treated as unwelcome guests.  Game MVP QB  Stephen Wasil (Albion College) in his first start at QB this season took Command and threw for five TD’s and ran for two more.  His partner in grind WR Bradley Chavez caught three of the TD passes and was Offensive Player of the Game.

Cleveland fell to 7-6 and stays in second place in the American East a win would have put them in first place.  Gladiator QB Kurt Rocco tossed 4 TD’s, ran for one and had only one INT. But turnovers blew up the visitor’s opportunities. The bright moments came from Cleveland’s Jack LB Mike Bragg, he had 3.5 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble, now with five forced fumbles is one of the AFL’s best at making mayhem pay.

One key to the win was KC running the ball 10 times, that duty went to Trey Bryant and he picked up 39 yards, taking some pressure off Wasil. KC got ahead of the scoring trade-offs when DB Sergio Gilliam took his 3rd quarter pick 12 yards. That stop gave Wasil and the boys a chance to enhance their game.  The Command get to test their new found star on their trip to Utah.

Yep, the Blaze will give Wasil a break, or two, because he will not have as many snaps as Utah’s Tommy Grady tries for another 10 TD’s. Good job, KC, buy some accident insurance as the Blaze are playing for their playoff lives and will take no prisoners. Cleveland gets to play the Sabercats at home, they have never played before and SJ and Mark Grieb are playing like the Cats of the past. Get set for the claws G-Men.

Chicago’s Rush to Spokane Leads to Shocking Loss 63-60

Six wins. That is how many the defending Champion Spokane Shock have this season after the glory of last year’s Championship season.  This week they hosted one of the AFL’s top defensive teams in the Chicago Rush. In the end the Shock D was dominant.  The victory, Spokane’s sixth was overshadowed by the fact that they have had more QB’s than wins.

Seven have played, now QB Erik Meyer is out. Chicago scored first and the teams traded scores until an Ironman stepped up. Shock LB Antwan Marsh intercepted Michna and then later ran the ball in for the score. This was followed by a defensive score when Shock defender Jon Williams sacked Michna and team mate Jonathan Williams recovered for a TD. This led to Spokane leading at the half 42-27.

After the break the Shock got an INT from DB Terrance Sanders. Then QB Meyers got his bad break. He threw a pick and injured himself making the TD saving tackle. At that point he had five TD passes. Ouch.  The Rush took advantage and scored after the pick then their D stole the ball from Shock QB, Rookie Steven Sheffield as DB Vic Hall pulled in the INT. The Rush scored again. Things were looking good for Chicago. Then Rookie QB, the kid did the right thing at the wrong time for Chicago as he tossed a 32 TD pass to Shaun Kauleinamoku  and locked in the win.

Rattlers  Bite Cats Win Division Title 64-57

San Jose knew the way to the desert today! Indeed, after struggling all season to protect AFL vet and one of the top QB’s in AFL history in Mark Grieb. The Green Machine brought in the players to fill in the needed spots and played the Rattlers snap for snap in one of the most exciting games for AZ yet. Not only did San Jose stay close, they forced the Snakes to come from behind, twice in the Snake Pit. Arizona special teams undid the good that the Sabercats offense and defense had accomplished in a heated rivalry game.

Victory thy name is GRAY….. DB Virgil Gray ran back two kicks for TD’s, bring his total to five on the year.  His second came as the third quarter ended and when it looked as if San Jose was taking control. The play of the game however goes to a member of the losing team as SJ Kicker Juan Gambo nearly stopped Gray at the goal line. In Arena Football the angles you have to recover in the outdoor game don’t exist indoor. A three step lead is nearly impossible to overcome for a defender. Gamboa caught Gray as he was about to cross the goal line at the North end of the Snake Pit. Gray fought through it and carried Gamboa into the end zone. The Sac State product Gamboa puts the football player tag in front of the Kicker job title. That man can play and fly.

Things are heating up in AZ, both on the practice field and on the game turf. Summer has arrived. How hot is it now? Water from your garden hose evaporates before it hits the ground during the day…. That makes it Kul that QB Nick Davila plays for the Snakes. The AFL top snap catcher is having a smokin’ season.  He threw seven TD’s on Saturday four to WR Jason Geathers, Jason also caught the game winner with ten seconds left in the game. Rattlers WR Kerry Reed scored twice and Rod Windsor the ultimate team player made a difference with his two point conversion grab.

The Defense for the Snakes stepped up as DB Vince Hill grabbed his sixth INT of the year.  Ron Jones, playing DL came off the IR, started and had a pass break up and two tackles. LB Tyre Glasper had fumble recovery to get the Snakes moving again.  It is a good thing they did too, the Cats D stopped AZ on four tries late in the game at the goal line. That led to the two TD lead for San Jose.
