Week 11

Week 10 results: Our Game of the Week was #6 Western Matadors at Phoenix Bears. If it were not for bad luck the Bears would have no luck at all. The Mats are a great team to be sure. Phoenix, well they have their moments, just not during the games. The Bears should be at worst, 7-3 this season with all the talent they have.  Sorry Coach Jacobsen, but sometimes big breaks are just injuries. Final Score 51-41 AWC wins and moves closer to a shot a National Bowl game.

Phoenix may still in the hunt for hosting the VSB, Valley of the Sun bowl. I don't have all the tie breaking rules and GCC did beat PC in OT earlier. But if SCC drops the Gauchos this week, and if the point difference is right. Well, perhaps the Bears get another shot at turning all those bad breaks into points for a change.

Games remaining in the Chase for the VSB

SCC at Glendale 7pm Homecoming

Maybe Halloween Eve worked it's way into the games. The Artichokes of Scottsdale hosted the Mesa Thunderbirds and it got spooky quick. Now Mesa and Scottsdale have had a hate, hate relationship since the then Yuppie campus of SCC started playing in '74 with HC John Avianantos. Then one of his assistants, Coach Ken Giovando would describe Mesa in ways leading up to the game that made you think MCC Star Mickey Hatcher was the Devil himself and Mesa CC was the gateway to, well, nevermind.

Many games since day one have featured much personal dislike for each other, sometimes leading to furniture being lodged in the wall of the press box. Players calling out coaches, coaches calling out coaches. Needless to say, the games themselves have been, well, heartfelt.

This last one featured the Thunderbirds almost Finding a Way, but falling short as Artie the Artichoke inspired the SCC men in tights to pull out a close 43-40 win. The only thing certain lately for Mesa is that every year or two they will have a new head coach and staff and that SCC will hate them too.  It also proves that schools with campus police driving DeLorean's will do okay. They don't drive them anymore, but they did in '74-'75.

Pima traveled to the Top of the Mountain and for a minute, it looked like the Aztecs could do the impossible. Then the Badgers woke up from their post Matador stomped purple haze and pretty much destroyed them, took away their hope, dreams and rumor has it they put Barry Manilow tunes in the Pima players Ipods when the guys were on the field. Now that is just mean. Badgers 47 Aztecs 11. Just remember when you play in Ephraim, they write the songs.

Are you kidding me? The Monsters traveled to Glendale and yes, they did the Mash, the Monster Mash and it was a graveyard Smash! Yes, this is also a rivalry game. Last man standing usually wins and sometimes even after the game they fight goes on. Final Score: Monsters 55 Gauchos 50.

Week 9

WSFL Recap by Kevin Pakos, ASPN & jrcollegefootball.com

#13 Snow 57 Scottsdale 38

New Mexico Military 21 Phoenix 18

Eastern 0 AZ  #8 Western 27

Mesa 22 Pima 21

More to come, these were early games on Saturday in the WSFL.

Looks like the Artichokes got their punches in, but they cannot say "you shoulda seen the other guy" not wen the other guy dropped 57 on them. Brutal. Next week. That is all I got to say for Snow, it is going to be a game.

WOW! An O'mera coached team getting shut out. I am ferclempt. I know, it is probably not a real word, but 27-0 against EAC, not so normal either. So the Matadors were not looking past them to Snow. AWC and Snow BOTH have a chance to get into position to host or play in a National Title game. It does of course depend on how some other teams do, but it is possible.

So with that in mind I say that the Snow at Western game in Yuma is our GOW or Game of the Week.  Last year the Matadors messed up the Badgers year in a way that only Butler had done before. Western HC Tom Minnick is not from here (WSFL territory) and those two wins just made him a tad bit less welcome. Now Snow HC Steve Coburn and his Marauders want their territory back. By any means necessary.

What makes this game so great is that both teams stepped up there level of play. Snow overcame a 35-17 Scottsdale halftime lead to win with a 40-3 scoring run in the second half.

In Yuma the Mats did what very few have to the Monsters, cut their league best running game average in half and shut them out 27-0. Plus they added six sacks. RB Reggie Bullock played like a man with a future in the game. It was such a dominating win that Mats HC Tom Minnick actually gave a quote: "This is our best performance of the year, so far. It's a rivalry game, the kids came ready to play. This is how I expected them to play all season long."

Expect the Snow V Western game to be a great game!

Scottsdale cannot win for losing! They went to Snow and literally stomped the Badgers in the first half with a 5 TD passing performance by SCC QB Cody Sokol and a 35-17 halftime lead. A pretty convincing lead that in most cases would have been enough.

Snow, a school with less than 4,000 students and being on Fall Break would play in front of a smaller than normal crowd. But the team with 400 wins has to something special deep inside the program.

The second half exposed that something special that HC Steve Coburn and his squad has. The will to win. Great special teams did help, but what is anyone supposed to do when a player spends the first half in civie's and a walking boot shows up in pads for the second half.

The Badgers simply rose to the level of commitment that injured defender and Captain Preston Hadley displayed. The second half was a different game and Snow forced SCC to replace Sokol as they picked off 4 SCC passes, one by Hadley. In most cases this would be an amazing story. But I have been watching Snow for decades now and it really is just more of the same for the team from the Top of the Mountain.

On to New Mexico, home of the Broncos. The Bears from Phoenix, if there was a song that would identify their team this year it would be "Heartbreak Hotel." The only thing worse than losing is when your players find a way to put defeat into the jaws of victory. HC for PC Land Jacobsen and his staff have done everything except suit up and play.

All they need is for their "playmakers" to catch the TD passes, hold onto the ball and do what they have the talent to do. WIN. But, alas, tis not to be for the Phoenix team. This time NMMI dropped the bears 22-18. Hey, SCC got a forfeit win after a NMMI loss, maybe the Bears should have someone check into it. What could it hurt.

SOBB Bowl I - Mesa Wins, Mesa Wins!

This year's Stay off the Bottom Bowl goes to the Mesa Thunderbirds. Yes, and maybe. There is still a chance that they could be first place, last place. But they could also win one of their two remaining games and finished tied for the season SOBB with Pima, a team with 2 wins already. This past weekend it was MCC 22 Pima 21.

Looking Forward to the October 23rd games.  Phoenix goes to Scottsdale and I am going to say that if PC gets some focus on they could surprise a very depressed Artichoke squad. SCC won't play soft, Snow reached into their brain and pulled out a lot of the confidence wiring. However, comma, this is the start of the run to determine who will host the Valley of the Sun Bowl and SCC would love that.  PC cannot earn that bid, but would like to deny it to SCC.

Snow at Western. Big game, big rewards, big time. Be there.

No, I cannot pick a winner so I am literally going to toss a coin. Just wait right there while if find one. Been using plastic so long I can't remember what one looks like. OK. Hold on.

It is rolling, spinning, uh oh. My stupid quarter just rolled under a 1,000 pound entertainment center and if I move it I have to clean it. So just come to the game and watch the best College football game in Arizona this weekend. Yes, even better than ASU, NAU and UA matchups.

Glendale at Mesa. Glendale has looked bad against some good and bad teams and still won. Mesa has nothing to lose. Stopping the Gauchos from getting the VSB could be a good prize, but I have to go with GCC on this one.

New Mexico at Pima. Nod to the Aztecs, they play well, play hard and it is time for them to pull one out, er, a third one. Besides, there is no way to make the drive from Area 51 to Tucson relaxing, the Broncos will need a day to unwind.

Will have the rest of NJCAA stuff later in week. Oh, one of the Kansas schools did lose and will drop out of the top three. So both Snow and Western will advance in this weeks poll.

Week 8:

WSFL Recap by Kevin Pakos, jrcollegefootball.com

The state of Arizona was ripped apart last Wednesday from North to South by horrific rain, wind and floods. Some parts of Arizona were total losses, homes, cars and more. The storms spared no one and did damage statewide. Many were left without power and homes.

The worst damage of all, as it relates to JUCO football was done in Glendale. Everyone thought the storms were over by Friday. We had great weather perfect conditions for practicing and preparing for the upcoming Saturday games in the WSFL.

Who knew that a little Snow in Utah could be fatal to someone in Glendale? Apparently the #6 Gauchos suffered serious unseen damage to their team during the storms last week. On Saturday in Ephraim, they had a complete power outage, their offense hit a wall and their defense, wasn't. In fact, all they got out of their trip was Badgered to death as they took a 44-7 beating and got a quick ride down the Polls as a reward.

I said last week that I did not see Snow losing again as they headed towards the Top of the Mountain Bowl. I never saw this coming! After all the Gauchos put the crunch on the AWC Matadors, at the time Americas number one team. BAM. It could only get better from their perspective, after all, the Matadors beat Snow twice last season. AWC and Snow will face off in Yuma on October 23rd to settle that discussion.

Yes, the Gauchos seemed troubled in the last two close wins. But wow, Snow really rained on their parade. The GCC loss stopped the current longest win streak in the nation and opened the door for Snow to host a National Championship game, if they can stop the Matadors.

We will have the NJCAA details of the WSFL games later this week here at jrcollegefootball.com, please check back.  In other WSFL games the Monsters of Eastern got past the Artichokes of Scottsdale 42-41. The Thunderbirds had their wings, tail feathers and beak busted by the Broncos from New Mexico Military 48-20. Pima, the Aztecs from Tucson gave the Matadors an early run for it before AZ Western ran away with it 32-13 in Tucson.

I want to give thanks to the Voice of the Matadors Jim Howell for helping us every Saturday night on http://www.aspnradio.com from 8-Midnight. Jim kindly sends the info on games that he has. This while he is wrapping his own broadcast, preparing the entire AWC sports programs reports and closing out a long day. Much appreciated my friend. CU on the Radio. You can hear his Matador broadcasts at the Matadors Sports Network.  See the entire WSFL Schedule HERE.

The upcoming games this weekend on October 16th have some great matchups with huge implications for bowl games. Some, not so much. First we have Scottsdale at Snow. This is my upset pick of the week, I know I said I don't see Snow losing but Snow plays AWC next week and the Artichokes could be overlooked. Expect Coach Madoski of SCC to put in some surprises on special teams and defense. Yes, Snow will have people at the SCC practices. Still should be a great game.

Phoenix College, Da Bears are hungry and NMMI should prepare for a scare. I have PC getting back on the win train this week in the land of UFO's. Pima at Mesa, wow. Pima is improved and on track to building a great program for the local kids in Southern AZ. That does not mean it will translate into wins tho and the program will likely outlast Coach Nugent, he is used to success, but he needs the tools. I have this as the "Stay Off the Bottom of the Bowl Game" It will be the only bowl either team can play in for 2010.

East Meets West is our "Game of the Week" The Monsters travel to Yuma to challenge the Matadors who won't officially be looking towards the Top of the Mountain. But even a blink in this one and you may find the Monsters with the Matadors on their backs as EAC tears out their throats. A bit much? No, don't think so. This game is the season for the family O'mera. Expect a lot of running, lots of surprise plays. Also remember, there will be blood..... CU on the Radio ;-D

Week 7:

New Release NJCAA 10/6/10

Big Games in WSFL and MACJC This Saturday in NJCAA Football

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 6, 2010) – September has come and gone and much has changed since the start of the 2010 NJCAA Football season. Four different teams have owned the No. 1 ranking in the weekly poll and 14 different teams have shuffled in and out of the top 10. This week marks the unofficial midway point of the season and the stakes continue to get bigger each week. Just two games on the slate this week are between ranked foes but there are many important conference games taking place.

The Thursday schedule is reducing each week as the MACJC (Mississippi Assn. of Community & Jr. Colleges) begins playing more contests on Saturdays. No. 7 Northwest Mississippi hosts rival Southwest Mississippi to highlight the Thursday schedule. The Rangers look to continue their offensive surge in the league as they rank third in the conference in scoring (31.2 pts/game) and third in total offense (415.4 yds/game).

Saturday’s schedule features two contests between Top 20 teams that are critical in two conference races. In the Western States Football League No. 6 Glendale (Ariz.) travels to Utah to face No. 16 Snow while No. 10 Copiah-Lincoln (Miss.) hosts No. 12 Pearl River (Miss.) in a critical MACJC South Division contest.

Glendale is off to its first 5-0 start since 2005 when it claimed the National Championship. The Gauchos have proven that they can win big and grind out a narrow victory. They needed overtime (21-14) last week to defeat Phoenix and also had a three-point win (17-14) in their first game of the season against Eastern Arizona. Their three other wins were by 11 points or more. Traditionally a great offensive program, this season it is the Gaucho defense that is standing out as they rank second in the WSFL in team defense (198.4 yds/game) and scoring defense (14.2 pts/game). Terrell Thompson and Ray Cottman are responsible for nine turnovers this season. Thompson has three interceptions while Cottman has forced three forced fumbles and has three fumble recoveries. A win by Glendale will put the Gauchos in prime position to win the WSFL title for the first time since 2005.

Snow has won three consecutive games after being roughed up by No. 15 Georgia Military 42-21 back on Sept. 11. Last week against Mesa, the Badgers scored 31 points in the first half and allowed just 26 yards of offense from the Thunderbirds in a 38-23 win. The Badgers are averaging 38.4 points a game (2nd in WSFL) and allowing just 20.0 points from their opponents (3rd in WSFL). Adam Eastman is powering the Snow offense by completing 66 percent (57-of-66) of his passes for 607 yards and five touchdowns. Saturday is homecoming for Snow and the school will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of their 1985 NJCAA Football Championship.

After upsetting arch-rival and top-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast last week 30-27 in overtime, Pearl River has another tough task this week when they travel to Copiah-Lincoln. One thing Co-Lin will be preparing for is the explosive Wildcat offense led by the do-it-all Melvin German. The freshman leads the NJCAA with 279.6 passing yards a game and has completed an amazing 131-of-190 attempts (69%). He has nine touchdowns and just one interception while also reaching the endzone six times with his legs. To no surprise Pearl River leads the MACJC in passing offense and has four receivers that have already caught over 20 passes with Steve McNair, Jr. (son of the late NFL QB) leading the way with 31 receptions.

Co-Lin enters Saturday’s contest (which is homecoming for the Wolfpack) after defeating rival Southwest Mississippi 27-24 last Saturday. Co-Lin linebackers Jordan Hunt and Sterling Thompson, and defensive back Calvin Jones were named Co-Top Defensive Performers of the Week in the MACJC after combining for 33 tackles and three tackles for loss. The Wolfpack defense ranks first in the MACJC (243.2 yds/game). In last week's game win over Southwest, Co-Lin quarterback Percy Turner was 19-of-33 for 215 yards and three touchdowns and was named Co-Top Offensive Performer of the Week.

The winner of the Pearl River – Copiah-Lincoln contest will take sole possession of first place in the MACJC South Division. The contest will be video streamed at www.colinathletics.com.

QUICK HITS
- History in the Making
…The first five NJCAA Football Polls have produced some big accomplishments. Arizona Western, Hutchinson and Iowa Western have reached their highest ranking in school history this season while ASA cracked the into the rankings for the first time ever this year. Also, this week’s poll has three teams from the Kansas Jayhawk CC Conference in the top three spots in the poll. The last time three teams from the same conference were ranked 1-2-3 in the poll was 19 years ago when Southwest JC Football Conference members Navarro, Kilgore and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M occupied the top three slots in the Oct. 1st poll of the 1991 season.

- No. 1 curse?...A few weeks ago it was mentioned that being No. 1 in the poll comes with its risks. This season four different teams have owned the No. 1 ranking, including the current top-ranked team Butler. Over the past month the previous three No. 1 ranked teams (Blinn, Arizona Western and Mississippi Gulf Coast) suffered losses nearly right after they took control of the top spot in the poll. Two of those losses were against unranked opponents.

- Racking up the Yards at Ellsworth…In 2008 and 2009 the Ellsworth Panthers were powered by their All-American quarterback Tirrell Rennie who led the NJCAA in total offense both seasons. Thus far in 2010 it looks as if another Ellsoworth QB will continue the trend. Through six games, Willie Tindal leads the country with 1,886 yards of total offense (341 rushing, 1,545 passing). He is tied for the nation’s lead in passing touchdowns (16) and also has four rushing TD’s.

KEEPING TABS ON FORMER NJCAA ALL-AMERICANS
Former NJCAA All-American gridiron warriors were again the highlight of last weekend’s action in NCAA football:
- 2007 All-American Isaac Odim (Rochester) rushed for 169 yards and four touchdowns and also caught a TD pass for Minnesota Duluth in their 56-7 win over Minnesota Moorhead. Odim was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season.
- 2007 All-American Nate Guillory (Coffeyville) rushed for 224 yards on 14 carries and three touchdowns for Northwest Okla State in their 43-14 win over Mississippi S&T.
- 2007 All-American Marcus White (Butler) had two tackles and a sack in Florida State’s 34-14 win over Virginia.
- 2008 All-American Leon Berry (East Mississippi) had three receptions for 97 yards and also returned a kick 97 yards to set up a touchdown for Mississippi State in their win over Akron.
- 2008 All-American Chris White (Mississippi Gulf Coast) had six tackles and 2.5 sacks in Mississippi State’s win over Akron.
- 2008 All-American Jacquian Williams (Fort Scott) had six tackles and one TFL in South Florida’s 31-3 win over Florida Atlantic.
- 2008 All-American Jakar Hamilton (Georgia Military) had six tackles in Georgia’s loss to Colorado.
- 2008 & 2009 All-American Tirrell Rennie (Ellsworth) rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns while also completing three passes, one for a TD, for Northern Iowa in their 24-14 win over South Dakota State.

- 2009 All-American Mychal Bailey (Southwest Mississippi) had eight tackles for the Kentucky Wildcats in their 42-35 loss to Ole’ Miss.
- 2009 All-American Vick Ballard (Mississippi Gulf Coast) rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns in Mississippi State’s win over Akron.
- 2009 All-American Cam Newton (Blinn) threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns to lead Auburn to a 52-3 win over Louisiana-Monroe. Newton is currently listed fifth on Heisman Pundit’s ranking of contenders to win the 2010 Heisman Trophy.
- 2009 All-American Tyrun Walker (Jones County) had a fumble recovery and 1.5 sacks for Tulsa in a 48-7 win over Memphis.
- 2009 All-American Trulon Henry (DuPage) came up big for Illinois with two interceptions and four tackles in a 24-13 loss to Ohio State.
- 2009 All-American Harrison Dreiling (Butler) had 10 tackles for Valdosta State in a narrow 21-19 win over Ouachita Baptist.
- 2009 All-American Hugh Thornton (Lackawanna) led the East Stoudsburg defense with 10 tackles and two interceptions in a 26-13 loss to Bloomsburg.

- 2009 All-American Dontrell Johnson (Garden City) had 186 yards of punt and kick returns and a touchdown reception for Murray State in a 40-34 loss to Jacksonville State.

FORMER NJCAA PLAYERS MAKING AN IMPACT IN THE NFL (WEEK 4)
- Ryan Torain
, RB, Washington (Butler) carried the ball 18 times for 70 yards and a touchdown filling in for an injured Clinton Portis in a 17-12 win over the Eagles.
- Brandon Jacobs, RB, New York Giants (Coffeyville) rushed for 62 yards on six carries and a touchdown in the Giants’ 17-3 win over Chicago.
- Dashon Goldson, S, San Francisco (Coffeyville) had eight tackles with a pass break up in the 49ers’ 16-14 loss to the Falcons.
- Shaun Hill, QB, Detroit (Hutchinson) completed 34-of-54 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns and also two interceptions in the Lions’ 28-26 loss to the Packers.
- Zack Bowman, DB, Chicago (New Mexico Military) recorded three tackles and forced a fumble in a rough 17-3 loss for the Bears to the Giants.
- Brett Keisel, DE, Pittsburgh (Snow) had another great game for the Steelers with five tackles in their 17-14 loss to the Ravens.
- Matt Bryant, K, Atlanta (Trinity Valley) kicked his second game-winning field goal in as many weeks for the Falcons. His 42-yard field goal with two seconds left in the game gave Atlanta a 16-14 win over the 49ers. He also made field goals of 37 and 31 yards in the game.
- Brandon Keith (Northeastern Oklahoma / Arizona) and Deuce Lutui (Mesa & Snow / Arizona) both started on the offensive line for their respective teams.

10/5/10 NJCAA:  Three Kansas Jayhawk CC Conference Teams Lead NJCAA Football Rankings

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 5, 2010) – A new No. 1 team highlights the latest NJCAA Football Top 20, released today (Tuesday, Oct. 5). Butler Community College (Kan.) takes the top spot after last week’s No. 1 team Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College suffered a 30-27 overtime loss to rival Pearl River Community College (Miss.) on Sept. 30.

Butler was the unanimous choice for the No. 1 ranking by voters this week. The Grizzlies received 140 total poll points and all seven first place votes. Fellow Kansas Jayhawk CC Conference members Hutchinson Community College (Kan.) and Coffeyville Community College (Kan.) follow Butler at No. 2 and No. 3 in the rankings, which marks the first time since 1991 that three teams from the same conference have occupied the top three spots in the poll.

Iowa Western Community College moves up to No. 4 after defeating College of DuPage (Ill.) 30-6, while Navarro College (Texas) jumps up to No. 5 following a hard-fought 9-3 win over Blinn College (Texas) who was ranked sixth last week.

Butler (6-0) picked up their fourth conference win on Saturday with a 35-12 victory over Garden City (Kan.). The Grizzlies expanded a 21-6 halftime lead by scoring two touchdowns in the first six minutes of the third quarter via a Zach Mettenberger touchdown pass to Connor Combes and a three-yard rush by Ben Axon. Mettenberger completed 10-of-18 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns while Axon led the rushing attack with a season-high 119 yards and two touchdowns.

Butler takes on Independence (Kan.) Saturday.

Hutchinson (5-0), which is holding its highest ranking in the poll since being ranked No. 1 during the 1970 season, defeated Fort Scott (Kan.) 35-10 last Saturday. The Blue Dragons are 5-0 for the first time since 1969. Cordarrelle Patterson led Hutchinson with 240 all-purpose yards, including 189 receiving yards and a touchdown while freshman quarterback Elliott Alford completed 10 of 16 passes for a season-high 220 yards and one touchdown. The Blue Dragons take on Dodge City (Kan.) Saturday.

Coffeyville (6-0) picked up their sixth win of the season last Saturday by defeating Air Force Prep 32-23. The Red Ravens’ No. 3 ranking this week is the highest for the program since their No. 2 ranking in the fifth poll of the 2005 season. Quarterback Cayden Cochran powered the Red Ravens by completing 25-of-43 passes for 382 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for another score. Next on the schedule for Coffeyville is Highland (Kan.) this Saturday before facing top-ranked Butler on Oct. 16.

POLL NOTES: The Kansas Jayhawk CC Conference leads the poll this week with three teams in the top three spots in the rankings…the last time three teams from the same conference were ranked 1-2-3 in the poll was 19 years ago when SWJCFC members Navarro, Kilgore and Northeastern Okla. A&M owned the top three spots in the Oct. 1 poll of 1991… The No. 1 ranking has now been owned by four different teams (Blinn, Arizona Western, Mississippi Gulf Coast, Butler) in the last five weeks…Blinn drops out of the Top 10 to end a streak of 17 consecutive polls in which Blinn, Navarro and Butler were all ranked in the Top 10….Navarro and Butler have now appeared in the Top 10 together in 18 consecutive polls... Iowa Western moves up to No. 4 this week which is the highest ranking in the program’s two-year history…Glendale holds the longest current winning streak in the nation with eight straight victories dating back to last season.

Week 6: Sept 30 Oct 1,2,3
Top 5 NJCAA Games
#1 Mississippi Gulf Coast beat by Pearl River in OT 27-30
#2 Butler KS uprooted Garden City 35-12
#3 Hutchinson KS ran down Fort Scott 35-10
#4 Coffeyville KS sneaked by AF Prep 32-23
#5 Iowa Western dropped College of DuPage 30-6

WSFL Games: The only good news in the WSFL is that someone will get  closer to the top spot after MGCC lost it's Mojo and will drop out of the top five. That means for this week at least, that Kansas holds the top three spots in the NATION. What do they put in their coffee in KS. Give us some.

Overtime is the word of the day in the wild west. These guys love the game so much they all want an extra quarter of play. The #7 Gauchos went into a rivalry game against Phoenix and all but gave the game away for the second week in a row. Land Jacobsen the PC coach would just be happy if his playmakers would make some plays. Dropping TD's to win in regulation has him chewing gun powder and spitting bullets. Expect some changes in Bear land. The score in OT GCC 24 PC 21.

GCC still has the longest winning streak in the NJCAA.

Not wanting to be left out New Mexico took Eastern AZ to the end and beyond before losing to the Monsters in OT 38-45. Down in the Dust Bowl known as Yuma the #11 Matadors treated their guests from Washington to a buffet of beat downs and broken bones as they crushed the Green River team 70-0. Coach Minnick continues his post game comments of no comments. That says it all.

#17 Snow is making up for lost ground and looks like they could head into their Bowl game without another loss. They treated Mesa to a 38-23 whuppin'. Pima college from Tucson, a "community college" is getting closer and running out of options at the same time this season. They artfully choked as Scottsdale dumped them 26-20.

.
Week 5: Sept 23,24,25
Top 5 NJCAA Games
#1 Mississippi Gulf Coast 51 SW Miss. 21
#2 Butler KS murderized Dodge City KS 63-3
#3 Ellsworth IA got punted by #11 Grand Rapids 49-28
#4 Hutchinson KS sat this week out
#5 Coffeyville KS was rude to Fort Scott 59-14

WSFL Games: The Top of the Mountain fell hard on New Mexico Military as #17 Snow played taps for the Broncos 31-17. The rapidly improving Pima Aztecs came up short to the team with the longest win streak (7) as the #9 Gauchos continue their climb towards number one. Phoenix gave Eastern a Monster game but fell 37-27 and Mesa may never "Find a Way" as Western flogged them 41-14. It can only get better, right....

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 29, 2010) – NJCAA football fans have been anticipating this upcoming weekend for quite some time. Despite their being just two contests between ranked opponents, many important contests take place this weekend that will go a long way in determining just who will be vying for respective conference championships.

On Thursday in Poplarville, Miss., Pearl River and Mississippi Gulf Coast will meet on the gridiron for the 88th time in one of the oldest football rivalries in the NJCAA. The two programs played their first football contest in 1926 and the Wildcats hold a 52-33-1 advantage in the series. However, it has been the Bulldogs that have dominated the series as of late, winning the last four matchups.

No. 1 ranked Gulf Coast is coming off a 51-21 win over Southwest Mississippi, which was their third victory this season by 20 points or more. Meanwhile, Pearl River forced four turnovers in their 44-13 win over East Central. Two of those turnovers were interceptions returned for touchdowns. The victory was their third straight since dropping their season opener to No. 9 Northwest Mississippi.

The two programs have dominated the MACJC South Division since 2004. Pearl River claimed the 04, 05 and 06 division titles while Gulf Coast has won the league the last three years. In all but one season (2005) the winner of their regular season matchup has gone on to win the division since 2004.

On Saturday (Oct. 2), a great rivalry will be renewed deep in the heart of Texas when No. 6 Blinn travels to No. 7 Navarro. To refresh everyone on the ups and downs of this great grudge match…in 2008 Navarro held the No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA Top 20 for seven weeks and headed into the SWJCFC title game with a 10-0 record before falling to Blinn 49-24. The loss not only crushed national title aspirations for Navarro, it also left the Bulldogs out of a bowl game due to the craziness that is the bowl selection process. Then in 2009, No. 1 Navarro again defeated Blinn in the regular season for the second straight year only to fall to the Bucs 45-34 in the SWJCFC Championship Game, which vaulted Blinn into the NJCAA title game where they defeated Fort Scott (Kan.).

This year’s Blinn-Navarro matchup is a lot different from year’s past as both teams enter the game with a loss. Blinn can’t afford another conference demerit after their 31-28 defeat to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M two weeks ago. A win by Navarro would put them in the driver’s seat with Cisco (Texas) in the SWJCFC title race. Saturday’s game should be another great contest between the two storied programs. Navarro currently owns the top defense in the SWJCFC (221 yds/game) while Blinn owns the top offense (406.8 yds/game).

Another important game on this weekend’s schedule takes place in the Northeast Football Conference when No. 12 Lackawanna (Pa.) travels to No. 19 Nassau (N.Y.). Both teams are looking to end the current three year conference title run by Dean (Mass.) and both have put together impressive resumes thus far. Lackawanna has limited their opponents to just 9.2 points per game (leads NFC) and is also scoring 31.2 points a game (3rd in NFC). Meanwhile, Nassau is first in the league in scoring (35.2 pts/game) and third in scoring defense (10.8 pts/game). Lackawanna comes into the contest fresh off wins over Hudson Valley (N.Y.), 31-17, and Louisburg (N.C.), 24-14, while Nassau recently defeated Navy Prep, 42-21, and Erie (N.Y.), 33-6.

The recent history of the series suggests the Lackawanna-Nassau contest will be a low-scoring, hard-nosed contest as their last two games were each been decided by a mere three points.

QUICK HITS

- Iowa Western cracked the top five in this week’s rankings. The rise of the Reiver football program is quite impressive as the program is just three years old and in its second season of competition. The program is the result of a lot of hard work by the IWCC athletic department and administration along with special assistance from the legendary Tom Osborne, current Nebraska athletic director and hall of fame coach. Stay tuned in the upcoming weeks for more on this great story.

- In search of a 2,000 yard rusher - NJCAA football has seen just six players since 1970 rush for over 2,000 yards in a season. The last player to accomplish the feat was Alan Jones of Lackawanna (Pa.) who gained 2,069 yards back in 2000. Jasmin Hopkins of Fort Scott came close last year with 1,931 rushing yards in 12 games. This season Matthew Willis (Hinds), Reggie Bullock (Arizona Western) and Josh Johnson (Trinity Valley) are all averaging over 135 yards a game through four contests. Those numbers are very impressive, but will not likely produce 2,000 yard season.

- Coaching milestons were again reached last weekend. Butler head coach Troy Morrell picked up his 109th carreer win as did Iowa Central’s Kevin Twait. The two are now tied for third most wins among active NJCAA head football coaches. Georgia Military’s Bert Williams moved up to No. 5 on that list with his 85th career victory and Tim Hatten of Pearl River moved up to eighth with his 70th win.

Top 10 Active Coaching Records

1. Gene Murphy, Hinds, 17 seasons                 139-48-5

2. Mark Duda, Lackawanna, 16 seasons           116-58

3. Troy Morrell, Butler, 10 seasons                   109-14

3. Kevin Twait, Iowa Central, 14 seasons         109-43

5. Bert Williams, Georgia Military, 10 seasons  85-26

6. Jay Miller, Mississippi Delta, 15 seasons       84-75

7. John O’Mera, Eastern Arizona, 12 seasons   79-57

8. Jeff Linder, Minn. West, 14 seasons             70-65

8. Tim Hatten, Pearl River, 8 seasons               70-17

10. Steve Campbell, MS Gulf Coast, 8 seasons            68-22

KEEPING TABS ON FORMER NJCAA ALL-AMERICANS

Former NJCAA All-American gridiron warriors were again the highlight of last weekend’s action in NCAA football:

- 2009 All-American Cam Newton (Blinn) again stole the show in a great game between Auburn and South Carolina. Newton completed 16 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 176 yards and three touchdowns. His performance earned him SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season and put his name in the discussion as a candidate for the Heisman Trophy.

- 2009 All-American Casey Therrialot (Grand Rapids) threw for 374 yards and four touchdowns in Jackson State’s 43-7 win over Mississippi Valley State.

- 2009 All-American Kevin Bolden (Mississippi Gulf Coast) caught two passes for 79 yards and a touchdown for Southern Mississippi in their 13-12 win over La. Tech.

- 2009 All-American Jamie Cobb (Scottsdale) had six receptions for 72 yards and two touchdowns for Robert Morris as the Colonials beat Wagner 30-9.

- 2009 All-American Trulon Henry (DuPage) had a great day for Illinois in their win over Northern Illinois. Henry had 10 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and a forced fumble.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Takes Control of Top Ranking in
NJCAA Football Poll
COLORADO SPRINGS,Colo. (Sept. 21, 2010) – For the second straight week the NJCAA Football Poll has a new team in the No. 1 post. The Bulldogs of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College get the nod this week from voters after previously top-ranked Arizona Western College suffered a 20-9 loss to then 14th-ranked Glendale Community College (Ariz.) last Saturday.

Mississippi Gulf Coast is 3-0 on the season and received 138 poll points this week and five of seven first place votes. Arizona Western slides to No. 12 in the rankings while Glendale jumps up to No. 9.

The Bulldogs needed a big second-half comeback in order to win their third game of the season on Sept. 18. Down 24-10 to Jones County Junior College (Miss.) late in the second quarter, Mississippi Gulf Coast scored 17 unanswered points, including two touchdowns in the second half, to get their first MACJC Southern Division win of the season. Running backs James Gillium and Eric Willis combined for 165 yards and two scores while Otis Jacobs had a 75-yard punt return for touchdown to spark the Bulldogs’ second-half comeback. The MGC defense shutout the Bobcats in the second half thanks to linebackers Mario Gainer and Chris Wright who both tallied 13 tackles on the night and Gainer added an interception.

Mississippi Gulf Coast, which last held the No. 1 ranking in 2007 when they shared the national championship with Butler Community College (Kan.), hits the field Thursday, Sept. 23 against Southwest Mississippi on their home field in Perkinston.

Butler Community College (Kan.) moves up one spot to No. 2 in the poll with 135 poll points and two first place votes. The Grizzlies are off to a 4-0 start. Ellsworth Community College (Iowa), Hutchinson Community College (Kan.) and Coffeyville Community College (Kan.) round out the top five.

Matadors of Arizona Western Move Up to No. 1 in NJCAA Football Poll By: Mark Krug NJCAA

COLORADO SPRINGS,Colo. (Sept. 14, 2010) - Arizona Western College takes over the top post in the second NJCAA Football Top 20 Poll released today (Sept. 14). The Matadors claim the No.1 ranking following a 31-28 upset win by Northeastern Oklahoma A&M over previous No. 1 and defending national champion Blinn College (Texas).

The 2-0 Matadors received 138 total poll points and five of seven first place votes while the Bucs slide down to No. 8 in this week's rankings.

Arizona Western won its second contest of the early season and also picked up their first Western States Football League contest last Saturday with a 47-17 victory over Phoenix (Ariz.). The Matador offense exploded for 525 yards and their defense limited the Bears to 79 rushing yards and just 150 passing yards. Reggie Bullock, a 2009 NJCAA All-American, led all rushers with 151 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Borck Ringo had two receptions on the night - both for touchdowns and finished with 138 receiving yards. Quarterback Brent Burnette was 15-for-25 for 236 yards. He had two touchdown passes and one interception.

Arizona Western, which last held the No. 1 ranking in football back in 1972, will host No. 14 Glendale (Ariz.) on Sept. 18.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College climbs up one spot to No. 2 in this week's rankings with 133 poll points and a first place vote followed by Butler Community College (Kan.) with a first place vote and 128 points. Ellsworth Community College (Iowa) and Grand Rapids Community College (Mich.) round out the top five spots in this week's rankings.

POLL NOTES: Arizona Western last held the No. 1 ranking in NJCAA Football at the end of their 1972 National Championship season...Despite two of them being 1-1, Blinn, Navarro and Butler have appeared in the Top 10 together in 15 consecutive polls... Iowa Western cracks into the Top 10 for the first time in school history this week. The Reivers are competing in just their second varsity season...Hinds appears in the Top 20 for the first time since the Sept. 26th poll from the 2006 season when they were ranked 19th...Copiah-Lincoln cracks the Top 20 for the first time since the final poll of the 2006 season when they finished that season ranked sixth...Georgia Military gets back into the rankings at No. 15 after handing previously fifth-ranked Snow a 41-21 loss...Ellsworth and Glendale hold the longest current winning streaks in the nation at five straight victories dating back to last season.

Week 2: Sept 2,3,4

Top 5 will be posted by Monday each week.
Top 5 USA: #1 Blinn, TX Buc's 70 - 7 over S.E. Prep. Really.. Why..
#2 Arizona Western, idle.
#3 Fort Scott lost 49-7 to #6 Butler, KS
#4 Navarro beat #17 Georgia Military 27-7
#5 Mississippi Gulf Coast blew past East Mississippi 40-21

So it begins! The rest of the teams got into action in week 2, and what a week it was.

WSFL Recap each Monday by: Kevin Pakos jrcollegefootball.com
In the WSFL, #8 Snow and #2 AWC Western took a week off while the Pima Aztecs took a stroll into the big city and bagged the Bears 17-14. Head Coach for Phoenix College, Land Jacobsen said "We had our chances, offense, defense, kicking game, did not get it done." Notable for Pima and Coach Nugent are the number of playmakers that are from Southern Arizona and from the Phoenix area. Looks great for Community College football indeed.

Gaucho Ball is back. Glendale took the long ride into Monster land and ground one of the nations top running games to a halt. Well, at least to a loss, Gauchos beat #16 Eastern 17-14 in a big game for both teams.

Rivals Scottsdale and Mesa faced off. SCC took a big early lead but Mesa came back strong. In the end the "Fighting Artichokes" shot down the Thunderbirds 38-27. Mesa has a new Head Coach, again, this time it is Denver Latimore. If the way the T-Birds rallied to make 31-27 late in the game is an indicator, expect MCC to have a pretty good season.

The Broncos of New Mexico Military were beat by AF Prep 33-28 in Colorado, ouch. NMMI was a bowl team last season and has tough schedule ahead of them including a trip to Texas next week to face Cisco.

Special thanks to Jim Howell the "Voice of the Matadors" for the WSFL scores and updates this weekend.

Top 5 will have a new look on Monday!
To clear the air on who is going to lead the pack right from the start #1 Blinn and #3 Fort Scott started where they finished in 2009. Result, the Bucs scored 55 to Fort Scotts 42 in the rematch.

That set the stage for #2 Western to stay on track for a run at a title of it's own. The Matadors went to California to play Monterrey Tech. There, Reggie Bullock, the Mats top back ran over and through Tech on the way to 3 TD's and 167 yards. The final Western 49 Tech 15.

Another top team #4 Navarro lost to the always contending #6 Butler 16-10. The only other top five team Mississippi Gulf Coast was idle.
